Milt Robinson

Guitar SCHOLARSHIP

The Milt Robinson Guitar Scholarship is offered to a student studying guitar at the Bermuda School of Music.  The scholarship is in honor of Bermudian bandleader and guitarist Milt Robinson.  Milton was primarily a jazz guitarist but also played classical guitar as well as trombone and cello. His trio was a fixture at the Gazebo Lounge in the Hamilton Princess Hotel for many years and he eventually formed the Shinbone Alley Cats, named after the street in St. Georges, which became the house band at The Coral Beach Club where it played music for dinner and then dancing a couple of nights a week for many years.  Milt also composed and arranged music for the band which was originally comprised of Milt on guitar, Jeff Marshall on electric bass, Peter Profit on drums, Doug Frith on saxophone, clarinet and flute and Lyle Van Wie on trumpet.  After Lyle left the island to move back to the states in the mid to late eighties he was replaced by Carl Shechtman on trumpet. For more about Milt see the link below.

The Milt Robinson Guitar Scholarship is made possible by Mr. and Mrs. Carl & Gail Shechtman of Spanish Point, Pembroke, Bermuda.  After several years with the Ghandi Burgess Orchestra at the Southampton Princess Hotel in the mid seventies after first coming to Bermuda, during which time he met his Bermudian wife Gail, Carl moved to the states and worked in the casino showroom orchestras in Lake Tahoe and Reno, Nevada.  He returned to Bermuda in the mid 1980's and joined the Shinbone Alley Cats on trumpet led by guitarist Milt Robinson, which was the house band at the Coral Beach Club replacing original member Lyle Van Wie, who had left the island. Carl played in the Shinbone Alley Cats with Milt at Coral Beach for many seasons from 1986 through the early 2000's when the live music scene in Bermuda deteriorated dramatically and caused the end of the heyday of live music on the island.
