Bermuda Chamber Choir
Bermuda School of Music (charity 483)
The Bermuda Chamber Choir has deep roots in the community being descended from earlier choral groups. The Geoffrey
Tankard Foundation Chamber Choir was started in 1980 by Anne Brown who led the choir to compete in the Llangollen
International Eisteddfod in Wales in 1988 where they were given exposure to international chamber choirs.
Anne directed the choir until 1990 when Graham Garton became its Director. For a short while it became a ladies choir, The Academy Chorus, but remained under the direction of Graham until his departure in 2000 when it was taken over by John York
Skinner. He resurrected it as a mixed choir, The Bermuda Chamber Choir of today, and re-established its pre-eminence in Bermuda. For several years this tradition was carried on by Ryan Ellis and later by Ron Campbell, and more recently by Kate Ross and Joanna Sherratt-Wyer.
The Bermuda Chamber Choir, now under the direction of Marjorie Pettit continues to bring the choral fine arts to life in our community. Through performances of the works of great composers such as J.S. Bach, Händel, Mozart, and Brahms, those of the more recent composers such as Vaughan Williams, Elgar, Rutterand many others, as well as those of contemporary composers, our ensemble strives for a high standard in communicating the masterworks of choral repertory.
Our mission is to share the art and joy of choral music with the audiences of Bermuda. Understanding and experiencing this amazing music from diverse cultures and historic periods is enriching and educational to our own community and culture. The choir exists under the auspices of the Bermuda School of Music and gratefully appreciates the support from the Directors, staff and collaborative performing faculty. As all concerts are independently funded, the ensemble depends upon the continued contributions from private donors. We invite you to become one of our valued Patrons whose sponsorship enables the Bermuda Chamber Choir to keep theart form of choral performance vibrant in our lives and the Bermuda community.
